The Beauty of a Mesh Drum Head

A mesh head is made from a stretched material to create skins similar to those found on an acoustic drum kit. They are very much suitable for beginner drummers to learn and practice with as opposed to kits with a rubber head. As the name suggests, the Alesis Turbo Mesh Electronic Drum kit was produced using the next-generation Alesis Mesh head drum technology.

Mesh heads in recent times have been regarded by electronic kit drummers as the best drum head to play and practice on. The reason is not far-fetched as mesh heads are known for their authentic feel and natural bounce response and sensitivity to strikes on it.

The mesh heads on the Alesis Turbo Mesh Kit are very sensitive to the playing patterns of the drum player as it picks up every degree and intensity of your play and responding accordingly.

Another dope feature of the Alesis Turbo Mesh Electronic Drum heads is that the tension and sensitivity of the heads can be tuned and adjusted. The Mesh heads enable the drum player to have freedom of expression and utmost flexibility, playing the kit while getting realistic, natural response and feel of the kit.

Structure and General Outlook of the Drum Kit

The Alesis Turbo Mesh electronic drum kit has a simple and decent outlook.

Although the drums are quite small in size, it is adjustable for different size of drum players. It is very easy to set up the kit and get it running as the assembly guide gives a detailed explanation on how to set up each part of the kit seamlessly.

Playing on the kit will give a feel and experience similar to playing on an acoustic drum set, with the way it is set up and the fact that it is made of mesh head further enhances this experience. The cymbals are fully shaped and nut half cut out like some other low priced electronic drum kits like the Yamaha DTX450K.

Another beautiful feature with the Alesis Turbo Mesh kit is the fact that it can be folded and tucked away after use and kept in a corner of the room. It will only occupy a chunk of space when you bring it out to play and practice.

As soon as you are done practising, all you need to do is just fold in the different pads and parts of the kits into the rack and tuck it away. It is lightweight so it is pretty easy to carry around to store away after use or to put in the car if you have to take it out.

The Sound and Volume of the Kit

Although the sounds on the Turbo Mesh kit are not the best, it is decent enough as you get good response while playing on the kit.

It comes with 10 different drum kit presets which include 4 electronic drum kit sounds, 4 acoustic drum kit sounds, an Afro-Cuban sound set and a Chinese sound set. These different sounds enable the drummer to try different new things while getting familiarised and developing his drumming skill.

Also, you can program the processor to produce different sounds using MIDI I/O and ¼” and 1/8” I/O, as there is a provision for this on the module.

The pads and cymbals have velocity- sampling for different velocities of strikes on the drum kit. The pads have the three-step velocity to detect mild, medium and intense velocity plays on the drum kit, to reproduce the accompanying sound on impact. The cymbal also samples different velocities one of which is the bell sound that is obtained on striking the cymbal hard.

Connectivity To External Devices

Mobile devices like phone and tablets, including laptops, can be connected to the module via the ‘Aux‘ input to play along to songs from streaming platforms and also Youtube tutorials.

The Turbo Mesh Kit also has a USB/MIDI functionality that enables the drummer to connect to a computer and record performances using music software, and also use VST instruments.

Pros of the Turbo Mesh Kit

  • The Alesis Turbo mesh kit is a fantastic kit for beginners who want to build and perfect their drumming skill. The learning tools and coach function enhance this learning process.
  • The size is not too large. It can easily be folded and tucked away after usage. Also, the size is adjustable to enhance the comfort of the drummer of the electronic Kit.
  • It is a very affordable electronic drum kit.
  • The drum module has a user-friendly interface that makes it easy to operate.

Cons of the Turbo Mesh Kit.

  • Pedals: Since the Turbo Mesh kit is a low priced electronic kit, it comes with foot pedals for the kick and hi-hat. The foot pedal for the kick is not so great as compared to a kick tower. Furthermore, most users complained of pedal failure, which I think is a factory production issue with some of the kits.
  • The sound although decent enough for beginners and kids is not so great for advanced players and recording musicians. To tackle this, advanced players might need to connect to a computer using the MIDI/USB connectivity to use VST instruments to improve the sound of the kit.

Final Thoughts on this Alesis Turbo Mesh Electronic Drum Kit

The Alesis Turbo Mesh Kit is a great kit for beginner drummers with its simple set up and coaching feature alongside other good features, all for a very affordable price. It is worth the buy. If you are looking for more advanced electronic kits from Alesis, you can check out their Nitro Mesh and Surge Mesh electronic kits.
